Backup Manager - Windows Installation Guide

To install Backup Manager on Windows machines, follow the steps given below:

  1. Double-click the installer and follow the instructions in the installation wizard.

  2. Click "Next" to begin the installation process. Go through the license agreement, select "I accept the agreement" and proceed to the next step. If you are updating from an earlier version, you will be asked to confirm this.

  3. Installation Configuration (Windows Application or Service):

While updating or installing Backup Manager, you can either install Backup Manager as a Windows Application or as a Windows Service.

By default, Backup Manager will be installed as a Windows Application and it will run in the background. Note that if you choose this mode, Backup Manager will only start if the user who installed it logs in to the PC. If the user logs off, then Backup Manager will exit.

Advanced users may choose to install Backup Manager as a Windows Service. Click on the link "Click here to install Backup Manager as a Windows service" and proceed to the next step.

  4. This step is applicable only if you have installed Backup Manager as a service. If you have installed Backup Manager as an application, please skip this step and proceed to Step 5.

If you want to run Backup Manager Service from the Windows Local System Account, select this option. If you run Backup Manager service from the Local System Account, then Backup Manager will not be able to automatically collect information on User specific backup configurations like Outlook/Outlook Express backup, and IE Settings. You will need to manually select the required files and folders.

If you want to run Backup Manager service from a Windows User account, select this option and provide the User Name and the Password for the user account in the appropriate fields and click "Next." In this case, Backup Manager Service will always be run from this user account. Hence, Backup Manager can correctly collect information on User specific backup configurations like Outlook/Outlook Express backup, and IE Settings.

If your Windows user login is dependent on a Domain Controller, then run Backup Manager Service from the Windows Local System Account. You can manually configure Backup Manager to run from a User account later by going to Control Panel -> Administrator Tools -> Services and changing the Backup Manager service options to run as a user.

  5. Select how you would like Backup Manager to run on this machine. You have one option:

    • Client only – This computer can back up on to other computers. However, other computers cannot back up on to this computer.

      Click "Next".

  6. (Backup Manager will skip this step and retain existing settings if it detects an earlier version installed) Enter a Backup Manager Identity. This will be used to identify this installation of Backup Manager on your network/your online backup service provider’s network. By default, Backup Manager takes the machine name. Ideally, enter the email ID of the client using this particular machine. Using an email ID ensures that your Backup Manager ID is truly unique. Note: The Backup Manager ID value is case insensitive. Hence, the "Backup Manager ID" you have entered will be automatically converted to lower case.

Enter a valid Backup Manager Customer Name. The Backup Manager Customer name is the "name" under which your client is categorized (on the backup server). By default, this is set to "Trial Customer". Your service provider can change this at his end, as required. If your service provider has given you a customer name, please enter it exactly as provided. Otherwise, please leave this as the default "Trial Customer". You need not to provide this value if you are installing Backup Manager in Server Only or Replication Server mode.

  7. (Backup Manager will skip this step and retain existing settings if it detects an earlier version installed) By default, Backup Manager will be installed under "FCDSC\Backup Manager" in the "C:\Program Files" directory. Click "Next" to continue installation in the default directory. Click Browse to choose a different directory. Note that this will create the "FCDSC\Backup Manager" directory under the directory you choose. Click "Next" to continue.

  8. If Backup Manager detects existing data left behind from a previous installation of Backup Manager (wherein you uninstalled the previous version but left some data behind), it will prompt you for a desired action. If no "old data" was found in the installation directory or if you are simply upgrading from an existing installed version, Backup Manager will skip this step.

  9. (Backup Manager will skip this step and retain existing settings if it detects an earlier version installed) By default, Backup Manager Server will store the backup data from the clients to the "<INSTALLATION_DIR>/FCDSC/Backup Manager" directory. If you want to change the server's default backup location, please choose a different directory from the tree. Click "Next" to continue.

  10. (Backup Manager will skip this step and retain existing settings if it detects an earlier version installed) There are three parts to this step.

    • Configure Web Server Port : Backup Manager's user interface is browser based. You have the option to configure the port used by Backup Manager web server here. Once configured, you need to use this port to start the Backup Manager Web Console from your browser. By default, Backup Manager Web server is configured to run on port 6060. Unless you are an advanced user, please leave this as is.

    • Username and Password : Since Backup Manager's user interface is browser based, you need to configure a username and password to login to Backup Manager Web Console. Note that you can add additional users, delete users, change password etc. from the Web Console UI after the installation. By default, the username and password used by Backup Manager are "admin" and "admin". You have the option to change these default settings here.

  11. Advanced Port Configuration (Including HTTPS): Click on the Advanced Port Configurations (Including HTTPS) link to configure Backup Manager backup server port, UI communication port and HTTPS port. Provide valid TCP port numbers for Backup Server Port, UI Communication Port and HTTPS port. You will be able to configure "Advanced Port Configuration" while upgrading Backup Manager too.

    1. Backup Server Port is the port through which Backup Manager clients will backup the data to the backup server. The default value is 32004.

    2. UI Communication Port is the port through which Backup Manager Apache/PHP modules communicate with Backup Manager to serve UI requests from the Backup Manager WebConsole. The default value is 32005.

    3. HTTPS Port: HTTPS Port is the port used to access the Backup Manager Webconsole in a secured manner through HTTPS protocol. Default value is 6061.

    4. Enable HTTPS: HTTPS Port is the secure webconsole port through which you can access the Backup Manager webconsole in secure manner. You should enable "Enable HTTPS" option to edit this value. If you enabled HTTPS option, you can access the Backup Manager webconsole through https://<machine name>:<HTTPS port> URL. Also, if you try to access the Backup Manager webconsole through http://<machine name>:<webconsole port>, you will be automatically redirected to https://<machine name>:<HTTPS port> url.

  12. (Backup Manager will skip this step and retain existing settings if it detects an earlier version installed) Click "Next" to select the Programs Folder to add the Backup Manager shortcuts (ideally, leave it as it is). Proceed to the next step to select required icons. For ease of use, allow the Backup Manager installer to create a desktop icon and a quick launch icon.

  13. Click "Next" to review your settings. Thereafter, click "Install," and proceed to install Backup Manager.

If you are updating from an earlier version, you will be informed that Backup Manager will now stop and restart after the installation.

  14. After copying the Backup Manager files, a page will show the progress of Backup Manager installation. If Backup Manager installation completes successfully, you will be automatically redirected to the finished installation page. Otherwise, the installation progress page will show the error details.

  15. If this is the first time you are using Backup Manager, take a look at the README file when prompted; it will help you get started very quickly.

Note

  • A shortcut to start Backup Manager and Backup Manager WebConsole will be created on the System Tray and in the Start > Programs > FCDSC Backup Manager menu.

  • Backup Manager will automatically migrate your old data to the newly installed version after you start Backup Manager for the first time.

  • After successful installation, you can open the Backup Manager WebConsole by right-clicking the Backup Manager icon in your system tray and selecting the Backup Manager WebConsole from the menu, or alternatively, doing the same through the Start > Programs > FCDSC Backup Manager > Backup Manager WebConsole menu. You will have to login to the WebConsole using the username and password you provided in the "FCDSC Backup Manager Configuration" screen during the installation.

Problem Starting Backup Manager in Windows 7 or Vista

Backup Manager is normally installed under C:\Program Files in Windows 7 and Vista. Please make sure you run Backup Manager with the option "Run as Administrator". The reason is that newer version of Windows allows an application to access the "Program Files" folder only when run as an administrator user. You can enable the "Run as Administrator" option for the <Backup Manager Home>\bin\StoreGrid.exe application through its file properties dialog through  "Compatibility" tab -> "Priveledge Level" -> "Run this application as administrator" option.

If you don't have administrator access or if you don't want to run Backup Manager under the administrator account, make sure you install Backup Manager under your own user account folder.
